Actually, you are correct.  The entire first book is played on a clavichord
while the entire second book is played on harpsichord.  I can definitely
see your point of how Bach seems to be almost "ripped off" when played on
the clavichord because of the instrument's lack of size and sound.  I
actually really love the clavichord.  I don't mind listening to Bach at all
on the clavichord.  The only problem I have is the lack of sustain adn the
fact that I need to crank up the volume.  It's funny to hear someone say
they prefer the harpsichord because it has so much more sustain but that's
exactly what I'm saying.  I know prefer the harpsichord but the clavichord
is still very lovely.
