Thanks for everyone's input.  I was probably not thorough in expressing
my concerns.  For starters, I have more than 3000 items on my Classicat
catalogue and would scarcely want to re-enter all of that data.  It is
in Access format, one could conceivably write one's own compatible program
and import the data.  I had the first couple of versions of Access, and
was trying to write my own about 15 years ago.  Then Classicat came along
and I had already discovered that the project was going to be beyond me.

I would be loath to lose the functionality of Classicat, though.  That's
why a non-relational data base like Excel would not suit me well, not
to mention having to re-enter all the data.
