That does seem to be the idea behind a lot of programming on CM stations.
Personally, I listen a lot while working, and I can listen to some pretty
strong stuff -- I sometimes think that the stronger the music, the more
productive I am, even.  Of course, I also tape a fair amount to listen to
later.  But if the idea is to play bland background stuff, why pretend to
be a "classical music" station? Just as there are "smooth jazz" and "real
jazz" stations, let's recognize the category of "smooth classical" -- goes
in one ear and out the other without ruffling any feathers.  People who
want that soft buzz in the background can tune in, and the rest of us can
ignore it.
