Taking a cue from another thread, how about Penderecki's Threnody? Or you
could take the "greatest hits" approach - the choral finales of Mahler's
2nd and 8th symphonies; the cadenza from the first movement of Prokoviev's
2nd piano concerto; the Prologue in Heaven from Boito's Mefistofele; etc..

And of course, there's the 1812 Overture -- I recommend the Mercury
recording with the West Point cannons.
