If you watch the video "Harnoncourt & Beethoven - The Concert [Symphonies
no. 8 & 6 Pastoral + The Making of the Symphonies]" (TELDEC 4509-91120-3),
you will see that during the rehearsals Harnoncourt expresses exactly the
opposite view (which is Steve Schwartz's view) - that is, the 8th Symphony
is a kind of homage to Haydn. Harnoncourt also mentions Johann Nepomuk
Maelzel (1772-1838), the inventor of the metronome.
By the way, I urge all list members to watch this video, absolutely
indipensable in any video library [already available in DVD?].
