Conductor David Handel to Lead La Jolla Symphony and Chorus in Performances
of Beethoven Ninth Symphony on February 10 and 11

Conductor David Handel will lead the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus in two
performances of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on Saturday, February 10 - 8
PM and Sunday, February 11 - 3 PM at Mandeville Auditorium on the campus
of University of California at San Diego, 9500 Gillman Drive in La Jolla,
California.

This symphony, beloved by audiences around the world, set a precedent
for composers -- many of whom attempted (some successfully and some not)
to create a symphony that is comparable to this massive work.  The sheer
size of the work (both in length and orchestration) gave both Wagner and
Mahler their conviction that the attention span of the average listener
could be stretched.  The final movement includes the well-known setting
of Schiller's Ode to Joy, and Beethoven gives it a miraculous melody
that is truly expressive of this great emotion during an extremely
difficult period of the composer's life.

The chorus and orchestra will be joined by soloists Virginia Sublet,
soprano, Martha Jane Weaver, mezzo-soprano, Aleksandr Agamirzov, tenor,
and Phillip Larson, bass.

Conductor David Handel has developed an extraordinary reputation as an
important innovator and is considered one of the most brilliant young
conductors performing today.  As Music Director of the National Symphony
Orchestra of Bolivia and the Orquesta Sinfonica UNCuyo in Mendoza,
Argentina, his creative programming and community outreach initiatives
have brought record numbers of South Americans to the concert hall.
Since serving as Kurt Masur's assistant conductor, American-born David
Handel has led orchestras throughout the world, including a preview of
young conducting talent with New York Philharmonic at New York's Carnegie
Hall.  He has been awarded a conducting fellowship from Germany's Leipzig
Gewandhaus orchestra and is one of few American conductors to have been
invited to perform in Cuba in recent years Mr. Handel has represented
the United States in Latin America and Central Asia as a recipient of
United States Information Agency awards and as a Cultural Ambassador
through the U.S. State Department Cultural Specialist Program.  He has
twice been awarded fellowships with the prestigious Fulbright Program.
