Thanks to Tony Duggan for his fascinating posting from the Daily
Telegraph.

However, one clinker should not be ignored:

>The Argentine-born Israeli [Barenboim] regards himself as a spiritual
>heir to Wilhelm Furtwangler, the inspirational interpreter who led
>the Philharmonic from 1922 to his death in 1954, with a seven-year
>break for de-Nazification.

WF was cleared ("de-Nazified") in 1947, less than two years after the end
of WWII, and gave his first concert with the BPO in May of that year. The
soloist on that occasion was none other than Yehudi Menuhin, playing the
Beethoven concerto.
