Christopher Webber <[log in to unmask]> about the Haffner
Serenade:

>The repeats are of course only there for the practical reason that more
>(or less) music might be needed according to the circumstances of the
>party. Some of them at least are there just as a safety net.

Unless there some record of Mozart saying this, you are being entirely
speculative.

>There's therefore no sensible reason, however reverently intended, to
>inflate the piece to Wagnerian proportions by slavishly including them
>all in performance, except possibly at summer garden parties to accompany
>the evening croquet.

There is nothing slavish about it. Part of the premise of being a musician
is not to place one's self above the music. Musicians choose to become
musicians knowing this. No one forces it upon them.
