Gieseking is the best. His mastery of color, shading and accenting in
the French repertoire is stunning. His (in)famously super fast tempos
may be off putting, especially in his Schumann. The opening movement of
Ravel's Sonatine makes me a little sea sick. I have a recording of him
doing the Beethoven 106 in 36 minutes and the opening of the Waldstein
in under 8(!) Next would be Cortot and Michaelangeli, impeccable as usual.
Pascal Roge,Arrau and K.Zimmerman are excellent. Malcunyski and Neuhaus
would be dark horses.
