That's a fair assessment, I think, because it bespeaks of public
acceptance. Bernstein belongs in this category, for his lighter stuff;
George Gershwin certainly does and maybe, mabe, maybe -- Cole Porter, too.
One field in which 20th century music has been very strong is in the area
of dance. Stravinsky and Prokofiev are up there with Delibes and
Tchaikovsky and, yes, all the others back to Lully; Americans, most of
them perhaps naturalized, have composed very successfully in this field
and a few made a good living from it.
