Being a "numbers person" these sorts of exercises are always interesting
to me. Having a database makes it easy to come up with candidate lists.
Below is a list of sixty some odd Op. 1's I could find in my collection.
It's not comprehensive by any means, but might give people a start on the
topic. It's interesting to note, for example, that both Robert and Clara
Schumann's Op. 1's were published the same year (1830). There are too
many works here for me to pick just one favorite, but the works by
Balakirev, Bartok, Beethoven, Brahms, Crusell, Dohnanyi, Enesco, Field,
Goetz, Mendelssohn, Paganini, Prokofieff, Rachmaninoff, Scharwenka, Robert
Schumann, Schutz, Stenhammar, Suk, Tartini, Vivaldi, and Webern standout
as examples of outstanding first publications.
