Orchestral Music of Steven R. Gerber to Be Performed by the Washington
Metropolitan Philharmonic in Alexandria, Virginia and Washington DC on
February 11 and 18
The first movement of Steven R. Gerber's internationally acclaimed
Symphony No. 1 will be performed by the Washington Metropolitan
Philharmonic, Ulysses S. James, Music Director on Sunday, February 11
- 3 PM at Bishop Ireton High School, 201 Cambridge Road in Alexandria,
Virginia and again on Sunday, February 18 - 5 PM at The Church of the
Epiphany, 1317 G St., NW in Washington, DC. These concerts are part of
the Philharmonic's 35th Anniversary Season.
Along with the Gerber work, the orchestra will perform Adolphus Hailstork's
Symphony No. 1 and Beethoven's Violin Concerto, Op. 61, D Major, with
guest soloist Elizabeth Adkins.
The performances of the opening movement of Gerber's Symphony are presented
in celebration of his having been named a 2006 Washington Metropolitan
Philharmonic Composition Competition Finalist. The Symphony received
its U.S. premiere on September 28, 2002 by The Louisville Orchestra,
Robert Franz conducting. The work was also performed in Russia, about
which Evening Moscow wrote, 'Gerber could serve as an example of American
musical professionalism: with freedom and confidence, he possesses the
entire spectrum of the means of expression of modern composition and all
of the different genres, and he stands out with the highest of temperaments
and musical taste.'

The Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Association's mission is to
inspire and instill a lifelong passion for the performance of classical
music in artists and audience through stimulating concerts, culturally
diverse collaborations, and educational outreach. It is an auditioned
community orchestra composed of professional and non-professional
musicians, and the orchestra in residence at Northern Virginia Community
College's Alexandria Campus. The Orchestra's goal is to introduce the
community and musicians to challenging contemporary and classical music.
In 1987, Ulysses S. James became the Music Director of the newly
incorporated Mount Vernon Orchestra. In 2004, the Association changed

Steven R. Gerber's music has gained international attention as a result
of two CD releases (on Chandos and KOCH) featuring several of his major
orchestral works, including the Symphony No. 1. Gerber has also achieved
great success in the United States and in his ten tours of the former
Soviet Union, perhaps becoming the most often-played living American
composer in that area. Mr. Gerber has written for a number of fine
soloists including Jon Manasse for the clarinet concerto, Yuri Bashmet
for the viola concerto, Kurt Nikkanen for the violin concerto and Carter
Brey for the cello concerto. His work has been performed by groups such
as the Louisville Orchestra, Knoxville Chamber Orchestra, the Fine Arts
Quartet, the National Chamber Orchestra and the Russian Philharmonic.
A CD of Mr. Gerber's chamber music will be released on Koch International
in 2007, featuring the principal violinist of New York City Ballet, Kurt
Nikkanen.
