It doesn't have to be a benefit.  I think that the impact of a piece
of music on an individual will be greater if there is an extra -musical
assocation.  But, the impact could well be negative.  Imagine being a child
and being physically abused by your parent; every time this happens the
parent plays a particular song, say, "Bad to the Bone." When the child
becomes an adult and hears this song - you know the rest.
