My quick survey of recordings of Arnold's symphonies did not mention the
composer's own fine performance of #3 on Everest, which was my introduction
to his work, nor Douglas Bostock's version of the 5th on Classico which
I've not heard. This CD includes a few short Arnold rarities such as
Machines and the music for The Belles of St Trinian's but these have become
less rare through being part of Vol 2 of Arnold film music on Chandos.
Arnold's own version of #4 on Lyrita is nla but at 54' is ponderous
compared with eg Handley at 38'. In any case, both are nla other than
as deletions or secondhand.
