Denis Fodor deals with the issue of Szell's Czech "nationality" referring
to an old Who's Who and notes:

>There is no mention of any period of residence in Czechoslovakia, or any
>specifics pertaining to the attainment of citizenship there.

Szell did spend some time in Prague: (1919-1921) heading the German
Theater, and later (1930-1936) as General Director of music (no indication
of just what this title means). During both these periods Czechoslovakia
existed, so that he had access to Czech citizenship. [Source: Alain
Paris' "Dictionnaire des Interpretes".]
