Electroacoustic Music of Judith Shatin to be Performed at University
of North Carolina at Greensboro New Music Festival on October 25

On Thursday, October 25 at 7 PM, saxophonist Susan Fancher will
perform the premiere of the soprano sax/electronics version of Judith
Shatin's Penelope's Song at the 4th Annual University of North Carolina
at Greensboro New Music Festival.  The performance will take place at
the Weatherspoon Art Museum, corner of Spring Garden & Tate Streets in
Greensboro, North Carolina.  The composer will introduce her piece at
the start of the concert.

Other compositions on the program include works by new UNCG Composition
Faculty member Alejandro Rutty, with Shawn Okpebholo and Morton Subotnick.
Other performers include the EastWind Ensemble, Anthony Taylor and Scott

Penelope's Song, originally for amplified viola, was inspired by
Homer's epic, the Odyssey, and focuses on the adventures of Odysseus'
wife, Penelope, Queen of Ithaca.  The electronics were created from a
recording the composer had made of local weaver Jan Russell working on
wooden looms.  She processed and shaped these materials, weaving a new
sonic fabric, using RTcmix, running under Linux.  The original version
of Penelope's Song was composed for and edited by violist Rozanna
Weinberger, who performed the American premiere at the University
of Virginia in March, 2004.

Called "marvelously inventive" by the Washington Post and "exuberant
and captivating" by the San Francisco Chronicle, Judith Shatin's
music reflects her adventures as a timbral explorer.  Her music is
internationally performed and has been featured at festivals including
Aspen, BAM Next Wave, Grand Teton, Havana in Spring, Moscow Autumn,
Seal Bay, Ukraine and West Cork.  Orchestras that have performed her
music include the Denver, Houston, Illinois, Knoxville, Minnesota,

by many ensemble across the United States, including the Barlow Foundation,
Kronos Quartet, National Symphony, Hexagon Ensemble and Virginia Chamber
