I've seen LP album covers showing artists smoking...Leon Fleischer
and Armin Jordan come most quickly to mind, so this doesn't bother me
at all. I'm going to assume that this cover was designed to appeal to
younger purchasers, who are more likely to buy a Nigel Kennedy classical
disc than one by someone else. Many of these people may not go to many
concerts or operas, but if they did, they'd notice that the program
booklets are often replete with wine and hard liquor ads, at least here
in the States. I'm a beer drinker myself, so I don't mean this as a
criticism, but the beverage most associated with more plebeian pursuits
in the U.S.A. such as spectator sports and partying IS beer; wine and
spirits makers frequently try to associate their products with more
upscale or adult proclivities like elegant soirees, museum-going, and
yes, classical music!
