Almost without exception, the reason given is either the aesthetic
limitations of the modernist style (great at sounding grumpy; lousy at
being happy) or the absence of any real audience for the approach no matter
how good the work is.  Writing works for the solitary soul is probaby the
most barren kind of art; & the idea that an artist should follow a style
simply because it's currently considered to be decently modern is a pretty
good working definition of intellectual kitsch.
