Steve Schwartz cuts admirably to the chase:

>Did Mahler really convert to Catholicism because he wanted to get into
>Alma's drawers, for example?

No. He had to convert before taking the top spot at the Hofoper in 1897.
I can't find the exact date of the ceremony. He didn't meet Alma until
Nov. 7, 1901.
