John Dalmas replies to me:

>Curious that a 1942 book of symphonies obviously weighted toward Americans
>would include symphonies of Hadley, Hill, Mason, Sowerby and Stringham and
>not those of Roy Harris, Harl McDonald and Randall Thompson, all three
>considered comers that year.

Whoops. Harris's 2nd and 3rd are there. I got so involved with checking
the Haydn stuff, I missed Harris entirely.

>More curious still is a book in 1942 listing Dvorak's final two symphonies
>as Nos. 8 and 9 (or was that a bit of tidy anachronistic editing, Steve?).

Yep.
