Patrik Enander points out:

(re Mackerras conducting Beethoven's 9th on EMI Eminence CDEMX2186)

>It's the recommended Ninth in Gramophone's Recommended recordings (att the
>end of every issue) Perhaps it's a safe middle-of-the-road recommendation?

I assume that the recommendation comes from their Beethoven specialist, and
I imagine that it is their recommended recording because it is closer than
other recordings to Beethoven's score as interpreted by Beethoven scholars.

One must also be a little bit careful about recommendations in favour of
British labels, particularly EMI, in British magazines.
