I didn't know about the Mendelssohn/Berlioz concert.  Berlioz conducted
when Liszt played his (Liszt's) Lelio fantasy in 1834 (or 1835).

Liszt did support a great number of major (Schubert, Beethoven, Berlioz,
Chopin, Schumann and Wagner) and minor composers.  His support was
essentially unaffected by external events.  He probably spent more time
and efforts (including money) on other composers than anybody else.
