I think there would have been more elaborate success if Duke Ellington
had done more symphonic work; maybe even a piano concerto. With his jazz
intellect, it probably would have 'smoked' piano/orchestral works done by
Gershwin [I didn't mention Stravinsky because his patterns of harmony using
jazz are very complex.......your classical Monk, maybe].
My other question would be a rather modern one-if pianist Keith Jarrett
would work at some large-scale orchestral works. He has proven his jazz
and classical intellect, it's such a shame he doesn't compose on paper much
(as I was reading a JazzTimes magazine, he prefers to invent music 'at the
moment').
But this is not in our history, so I digress to accept what each has done
and move on....but still, good ideas.......:-)
