There are two Missa Solemnis recordings which I enjoy immensely, often
playing them one immediately after the other.

EMI CDC 7 49950 2 (1 CD)
Conductor: Jeffrey Tate
English Chamber Orchestra and Tallis Chamber Choir
Carol Vaness, soprano; Waltraud Meier, contralto; Hans Peter Blochwitz,
tenor; and Hans Tschammer, bass.

EMI CMS 69538 2 (2 CDs)
Conductor: Otto Klemperer
New Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus
Elizabeth Soderstrom, soprano; Marga Hoffgen, contralto; Waldemar Kmentt,
tenor; and Martti Talvela, bass.

The Klemperer recording also contains Beethoven's Fantasia in C major, for
piano, chorus and orchestra. Daniel Barenboim is the pianist. The chorus
is the John Alldis Choir.

For trivia buffs:
QUESTION: There is a link between the two Missa Solemnis recordings. Do
you know what it is?

ANSWER: Jeffrey Tate was a member of the New Philharmonia Chorus, singing
in the bass section, when the Klemperer recording was made.
