There are two versions that I have heard.  One is back from the 60's or
70's on EMI.  The recorded sound is fine but the singers sing in a "grand
opera" style which may or may not suit your taste.  There is a recent
recording on Hyperion with singing in a more folksy style that I find more
endearing, but the recording is extremely dry, something I have rarely
encountered with the Hyperion label.

I hope this gives you some insight.  By all means check out "The Pilgrim's
Progress" and "Sir John in Love."  I've never met a VW I didn't like!
