Jed Distler selected this set in the last Gramophone Awards issue (Nov.
1998) as among the best of the year. Distler wrote: "Music & Arts have
splendidly refurbished, on a five-disc set, the pianist's long unavailable
1954 Haydn Society Mozart recordings. These met with high praise in these
pages as well as in the Gramophone quarterlies IPQ and ICRC. 'I have
no hesitation in preferring these earlier performances to those of
1967-8 [on Sony]' writes EG 'They are not only more dramatic, but more
spontaneous-sounding too, with firmer technical control.' If Haebler's
Mozart often recalls Gieseking's delicately chiseled, bespectacled post-war
EMI cycle, Kraus's more forceful, virile approach evokes her one-time
mentor Artur Schnabel's adage 'Safety last!' Her angular phrasing is
vitalized by illuminating, guidepost-like accents, and she has an acute
ear for voice leading and harmonic tension=8AIn short, these marvelous,
vibrant recordings deserve room in any serious piano collection."
