Hear An Interview With American Conductor David Handel on National Public
Radio About His Work With The National Symphony of Bolivia

Washington D.C.-based National Public Radio has released an interview
by Reese Erlich with American conductor David Handel about his work to
put the National Symphony of Bolivia on the map. Through Andean folk
music, Maestro Handel has appealed to indigenous residents and is making
Bolivia a destination for world-class symphonic music. You can listen
to the interview online at
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4752029.

In addition to his work in Bolivia, Handel is also Music Director
of the Orquesta Sinfonica UN Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina and Principal
Conductor of American Voices. There is a Spanish-language article about
his Mendoza appointment online at

and a Miami Herald article at

David Handel has developed an extraordinary reputation as one of the
most respected and innovative conductors in Latin America. His imaginative
programming and distinctive community approach have brought record numbers
of Bolivians to National Symphony concerts. Since the beginning of his
tenure in Bolivia, audience attendance has grown twelve-fold, most of
the new audience composed of young concertgoers. Handel's energy and
critical acclaim have made him one of the busiest conductors in Latin
America and has led to his numerous invitations as guest conductor with
many of the most important orchestras of the region.

The syndicated South American magazine COSAS reported "...Handel has
brought the National Symphony of Bolivia to levels of public awareness
and excellence heretofore unknown. His energetic podium manner and
repose in real life are fresh air in our midst." In fact, Handel's
imaginative programming and distinctive community approach have brought
record numbers of Bolivians to National Symphony concerts. Visit the

Since serving as Kurt Masur's assistant conductor, David Handel has led
orchestras throughout the world, including a preview of young conducting
talent with New York Philharmonic at New York's Carnegie Hall. He has
been awarded a conducting fellowship from Germany's Leipzig Gewandhaus
orchestra and is one of few American conductors to have been invited to
perform in Cuba in recent years Mr. Handel has represented the United
States in Latin America and Central Asia as a recipient of United States
Information Agency awards and as a Cultural Ambassador through the U.S.
State Department Cultural Specialist Program. He has twice been awarded
fellowships with the prestigious Fulbright Program. More information
