I have heard the Kronos Quartet perform the Schnittke. I must say I quite
like them. But having not heard any other quartet perform the works, I
cannot say one way or the other if the interpretations are 'good' or not.
And of course, I am not authority on Schnittke's music in general.

For me, on listening to them, it was always the work I wanted to hear
and not the performance; that is, I did not buy the cd because of the
large "Kronos" printed on the front, but because of the "Schnittke String
Quartets". I hadn't heard any Schnittke before, so I tried it out ...
liked it ... liked the works. There can't be too many recordings of the
Schnittke SQs out there, so I suggest you not get caught up over the
infinite problems of "proper performance".
