Writes Esther Simms:

>When I mention career paths, I am referring to where the main source
>of income came from. In Haydn's case, he was well looked after in the
>Esterhazy residence, but was restricted in the type of music that he wrote,
>which was to satisfy the tastes of the prince.

My impression is that Haydn had lots of time and freedom to try new
things and excellent musicians in residence to play the new things. In
fact I have a dim recollection that Haydn wrote that, being far from the
bright lights, he had nothing to distract him from composing!!!
