Karl Miller wrote concerning Berg's violin concerto:

Berg uses Bach's harmonization of the chorale "Es ist genug" - "It is
enough" from Cantata #60 "O Ewigkeit du Donnerwort" He uses 4 clarinets
to proclaim the first verse of the chorale followed by a wonder other-key
replay by soft violins. The clarinets continue to play the remainder
of the chorale that will be used as a set of variations. Berg seemed
particularly attracted to the variation form.
