Quite right.  It isn't.  If anyone symbolises British music in this century
it's Britten, and in more recent times one might make a case for Tavener (a
man much interested in icons, so it would be appropriate!)

Vaughan Williams is not, I'm afraid, well enough known outside CM culture
to qualify for iconic status.  Despite being much loved and admired by many
within the fold, he has never acquired a high profile outside it.
