There's a Beecham story thats apropros here. And as they say, if it didn't
actually occur, it should have!

At the beginning of a rehearsal or recording session, after the oboist
presented a vibrato-laden A for the orchestra to tune by, the maestro
quipped: "There you are, gentlemen - take your choice."
