There is quite a gulf between appreciating something someone has done,
which one may not feel is either within one's abilities or worth the cost
of sacrificing other activities in order to accomplish, and actually being
in awe of it.  I can quite honestly state that I am not in awe of any
piece of music, although some can inspire the feeling of awe in me, which
is a different thing.  Since Bach's music exemplifies primarily hard work
and craftsmanship, the suggestion that one could not write similarly is
a bit disheartening, to say the least.  On the other hand, one can
certainly appreciate the fruits of that labor, even if beginning
composition students are asked to produce something similar.
