With all this Rattle worship, to which I've lent a strong hand myself, I'm
going to demur a bit. Partly this is because I buy CDs mainly when I don't
have the works on LP and thus don't have as many Rattle performances as I
might. But I have heard a few, and the irony is that I haven't been that
impressed with most of them. My positive views come more from hearing him
live several times, both in Boston and the UK. There has been a rare
turkey, but most of those concerts were remarkable, a couple spectacular.
The reason I've looked favorably upon Rattle's candidacy for Boston is
because the spectacular performances took place with the BSO.

That said, there is one Rattle recording of Rattle's that I've liked--the
Elgar Dream of Gerontius. Mainly for the conducting, though, which is very
interesting and dramatic. I am not so happy with the soloists.
