News from the Wagner Society of Washington, D.C.

The Wagner Society announces another event in its Year of Die Walkure
series, a musically illustrated slide lecture by Washington's beloved
opera lecturer

SAUL LILIENSTEIN

"'Die Walkure' On The Mind Of Mann: The Influence And The Insight"

Thursday, November 14, 2002
7:30 P.M.
Funger Hall 108,
George Washington University,
2201 G Street, Northwest,
Washington, DC

In a program free to Wagner Society members and the public, the noted
musicologist, conductor, teacher, and producer of opera Saul Lilienstein
will discuss Die Walkure, the second opera of Wagner's monumental
tetraology, Der Ring des Nibelungen, and its influence on the work of
novelist Thomas Mann.

Lilienstein is a former student of Leonard Bernstein. He first came
to the attention of Maryland audiences as conductor of the Handel Choir
of Baltimore in the 1960s. Later he turned to opera and produced and
conducted more than fifty works as artistic director of the Harford Opera
Theater and of Operetta Renaissance. As a professor of music, he has
lectured at the Smithsonian Institution, the Johns Hopkins School of
Continuing Studies, Morgan State University, Essex Community College,
and the Maryland Institute. He is a frequent guest lecturer in the Opera
Insight Series of the Washington Opera. In recent years, he has developed
sets of CDs with musically illustrated commentary and analysis of
twenty-three different operas. These may be bought through the Washington
Opera.

Attending a Lilienstein lecture is like attending a performance mixing
improvisation with scholarship, thereby taking a fresh and novel look
at each opera.
