I wouldn't say our view is distorted.  Myopic is the word that comes
to mind.  It is so myopic, that we have no sense of the entire picture.

A correspondant of mine does much of his research on concerted works
for piano and orchestra.  As I recall his list currently includes
about 12,000 pieces.  Ok, how many can any of us name...
