In what way is he superficial?  I have conducted quite a number of his
a cappella choral works, and find them to plumb the depths of emotional
expression.  They are every bit on a par with the sacred music of Brahms,
and they are written with a far superior understanding of choral technique
than any other romantic composer with the possible exception of Rheinberger.

These are sublime works, totally expressive in both their text setting
and in their splendid and unique harmonic language.
