New York's Americas Society Presents Recital by Internationally Acclaimed
Argentinean Pianist Valentin Surif on January 30

New York - The Americas Society Music Department will present a recital
by internationally acclaimed Argentinean pianist Valentin Surif, on
Friday, January 30 at 7:30 PM in the Salon Simon Bolivar of The Americas
Society, 680 Park Avenue, corner of 68th Street and Park Avenue in
Manhattan.

This program will feature Celestino Piaggio's 'Sonata en Do sostenido
Menor' (1913), Alberto Williams' 'Tres Hueyas', Op.  33, Carlos Guastavino's
'Sonatina' and Roberto Garcia Morillo's 'Cuarta Sonata', Op 26 (1959).

Valentin Surif has gained wide recognition for his virtuosity as well
as for promoting works of Argentine and other Latin American composers.
Born in Buenos Aires, Surif has performed extensively and to great
acclaim in Europe, the Americas, and Africa, having toured in Brazil,
Spain, France, El Salvador, Honduras, Colombia, Portugal, Tunis, Nigeria,
and South Africa.  In the U.S., Mr.  Surif has performed at Northridge
University in LA, the War Memorial Performing Arts Center of San Francisco,
St.  Petersburg College in Florida, St.  Thomas University of Houston,
and The University of Kansas.  While in the U.S., he recorded an anthology
of Argentine composer Alberto Williams for the Naxos-Marco Polo label.

The Americas Society's 2003-2004 season of Music of the Americas
explores genres that began 'in the streets' and were later transformed by
conservatory-trained musicians, like Tango, Jazz, Cuban Danzones, among
others.  A series of videos from the Latin American Video Archives will
be shown through out the season, each complimenting their respective
concert.

The Americas Society promotes understanding of the political, economic,
and cultural issues that define and challenge the Americas today.

The Americas Society re-established the Music Department in January of
2001 and appointed Conductor/Flutist Maria Elena Tobon as its Director.
The new Music Department promotes works by composers from Latin America,
the Caribbean, United States and Canada, and also represents these
region's diverse musical traditions.  Music of the Americas 2003-2004
season of concerts and educational components is made possible by the
