Say what you like about Pavarotti, I can still remember the frisson I
had when I first heard that gorgeous voice.  It was 1968.  An Argentine
baritone of my acquaintance played me a recording of 'Una furtive lagrima',
and I was sold.  I said to him at the time 'this is a voice in a million'.
I'd never heard his name before and this was certainly before the Pavarotti
PR machine was in high gear.  I continued to feel that way about the raw
sound of the voice, leaving aside whether he was much of a musician.  It
continued to be electrifying.  And instantly recognizable.
