I was pleased that several people mentioned the Manzoni/Pollini disc and
a panned-but-quite good Bruckner 3rd.  It's like Blomstedt's SFSYO 6th.  I
had a chance to see his open rehearsal at Avery Fischer hall in the 1980s.
He kept kicking the NYPO off autopilot on the Schumann 2nd.  When there
were critics at the time complaining that Robert's symphonies were crummily
scored, Sinopoli made clear sense out of the hardest one of them all...no
mean achievement.  To this day, it's the final exam for newish conductors
and that is the lasting impression he's made on me.  He has never got the
recognition he deserves.
