Not to throw a monkey wrench in the works but could the distinction between
popular and classical have originated from traditions as simple as music
sung/performed/enjoyed by the people (populus) was termed popular and music
sung/performed/enjoyed by the classes (aristocrary/elite?) was termed
classical and the tradition just carried over to the present?

Dodging slings and arrows....
