When John deHaan got sick and was unable to perform the role of Siegfried
in Seattle in 1995 Speight Jenkins mentioned that he had the unenviable
task of having to find another Siegfried on a harrowingly short notice. In
a public talk he mentioned that apart from deHaan there were only six guys
in the whole world that he would consider for the role. Three of them were
in Bayreuth. He managed to free Wolfgang Hassler (Fassler perhaps?) from
an engagement as Florestan and put him into the production with stunning
results both musically and scenically.

The Seattle production presented each of their three cycles sequentially
and gave the singers plenty of time to rest between appearances. They
used a different Bruennhilde for "Siegfried" than for "Walkuere" and
"Goetterdaemmerung" (Nadine Secunde said that she wouldn't come to Seattle
only to do Sieglinde), and only two performers were on stage all four
nights.
