The sting of the fence.  It's the smell of ripening nectar that attracts
them, not the bacon.
Once stung on the nose, they really avoid the fence, even if the battery
goes dead.

Tip: turn off the charger before placing the bacon on the wires!

I agree that the little Zareba solar unit is a joke--I wasted money on them.
I also use mostly deep cycle battery units, swapping out every month or two,
with a solar panel where there is good sun.

I have also been using a Parmak solar unit for over a year in one yard, and
it has never gone low, even when grounded to green weeds.  I've been very
impressed!
