The author of the paper gave a good explanation for his choice of
concentrations:

"The doses were chosen to cause low, but not 0 mortality in a 24-48 time
period. This was an acute mortality assay so not necessarily meant to mimic
field exposure. I was most interested in assessing the mechanisms, and
will need to see if lower doses over longer periods have the same effects."

Mortality is a clear and simple metric--dead or alive, easy to count! So I
feel that his use of those concentrations was indeed justified. What we
need to be careful with, is wildly extrapolating the findings until they've
been replicated at field-realistic doses.

One thing that we've learned in this discussion, though, is that you sure
don't want to feed your bees canned tomato paste!
