Of course, and I do this all the time. But the problem is they may use the material to replace the queen with one of a different lineage. Also, if it prevented the colony from failing, it would qualify as an intervention. I would not rule out most of the rest: feeding, moving hives to a flow, etc. 

I wish I had embarked on such a project sooner, but all my current colonies were started in 2014, so here goes.
