In Jan 1995, I asked Dr H. Shimanuki for an update of the status of
research on linoleic and lauric acids for AFB. He had previously
reported isolating these fatty acids from chalkbrood mummies, after it
was observed that apiaries with high chalkbrood, had low AFB.
Lab trials confirmed that they had a suppressive effect on AFB.

As of Dec 1994, field efficacy with the doses used was not adequate.
Trials were to have continued, but Dr Shimanuki indicated that it was
obvious that the materials will not be as effective as oxytetracycline.
