Thanks for the response Kathryn.  There are some strong personalities on
this List, often with strong opinions, but not nearly as much so on some
unmoderated lists.  And some of us will purposely argue the "other side"
 in order to keep discussion more balanced when we see "discussion" being
one sided.  That's exactly why I thank Charlie for challenging us.  There
is nothing that I find more mentally stimulating than to have someone
convince me to change my opinion on something.

I too seek out good data and ground truthing, and find that many with
actual expertise prefer to lurk, and then discuss off list (I can hardly
blame them).  There are observers and researchers from all over the world
who could engage in meaningful discussion.  Perhaps your heartfelt post
will be a wake up call to both the moderator and well as those posting that
this List could be so much more by keeping discussions less personal,
substantiating opinions with evidence, and taking the time to proofread
posts before hitting "send."
