This does not make sense from a physics standpoint.  Once mixed with air the density difference from pure air is negligible.  The density difference might cause the formic air mix to settle for a few mm next to the formic source in still air.  But a hive does not have still air.  And at greater distances dilution with surrounding air is going to make the density difference too small to matter.
