I am thinking of one experiment that might need like 20 scales (one per hive).

I am now wonder if I can modify a digital bathroom scale so that 1). that its display does not turn off, and 2). perhaps an output that can be logged (not really necessary, but it would be nice) to a hobo recorder or something like that (flash drive?).

if the auto off function can be turned off, one can perhaps move the LCD screen to the front of the hive so one can see the hive weight at any time....

an interesting project since a real digital scale will cost more than $300 while a bathroom scale can be bought for $20. But I wonder if the bathroom scale can 1). last that long in the field (can provide adapter to make it rain proof) due to the sensor getting too "tired"? or 2). the internal battery might run out after 2 weeks rendering it useless to track long term weight-trend (~2-6 weeks).

Thanks.

Zach
