Hi All,

I inadvertently obtained some interesting data re the feeding
preferences for at least one large black bear in the Calif foothills.

The bear first encountered a few waxmoth-infested brood boxes that I
had stood on end at the entrance to my home bee yard. He pulled out a
few frames and chomped on them.

He then headed towards the live colonies, but first encountered a few
plastic tubs of freshly-mixed pollen substitute.

He apparently found the supp to be a less painful or more palatable
food than live beehives, as he carried three of the tubs off to the
nearby woods for dining at his leisure.

He returned the next night to find the electric fence up, but did
locate some tubs with supp residue, and carried them off to the same
favored dining spot.

So apparently the pollen supp formula on my website gets the black
bear seal of approval. Not that I've found bears to be especially
picky.

Randy Oliver
